Written for Vox Baroque and Cantata Vespers at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton NZ. Premiered June 2025.
I must remind myself that this is at once a traditional ceremony, a performance, and a spiritual homage to people who these days have a history and shared context unlike any other. This is not simply music playing while words are sung, lovely though that may be. […] Be impressed by the quality of this work. Byett wrote both the text and music for the cantata himself, matching poetry and sound to enable each to illuminate the other in a flawless and moving experience of profound beauty. The combination was at once both simple and richly complex, accessible to everyone, and so compellingly engaging that at times, members of the audience were moved to tears. Our history, truly, has been redefined.
